Rhodiola rosea

Adaptogen with EMA monograph for fatigue and stress symptoms. Best in the morning.

Why

Rhodiola rosea has been used historically for endurance under fatigue. Trials in mild-to-moderate burnout and stress-related fatigue show modest improvements in self-reported energy and cognitive performance. Useful when stress presents as flat, drained energy more than wired anxiety.

How it works

Rosavins and salidroside modulate monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine) and reduce cortisol response to acute stress.

Expected onset · 1–2 weeks for fatigue / energy effects

How to take

Dosage

200–400 mg/day of standardized extract (3% rosavins, 1% salidroside).

Timing

Morning, on empty stomach

On the label

Look for SHR-5 or standardized to 3% rosavins, 1% salidroside.

Ideal for

People with stress-related fatigue rather than acute anxiety.

Safety

Can be activating; avoid in the evening. Avoid in bipolar disorder.

Evidence

At a glance

EMA HMPC monograph registers Rhodiola rosea root as a Traditional Herbal Medicinal Product for symptoms of asthenia (fatigue and weakness): traditional-use registration based on consistent reports of modest improvements in stress-related fatigue and cognitive performance across small RCTs.
