Java tea (Orthosiphon stamineus / aristatus)

EMA-monograph aquaretic for urinary tract irrigation, with secondary use in mild renal stone management.

Why

Java tea (Orthosiphon stamineus / O. aristatus) leaf holds an EMA HMPC monograph at Traditional Use for increasing the amount of urine to achieve flushing of the urinary tract, as an adjuvant in minor urinary complaints. Widely used in Southeast Asian and European phytotherapy. Smaller body of work supports adjunctive use in calcium oxalate kidney-stone management.

How it works

Sinensetin, eupatorin and rosmarinic acid produce aquaretic effect via increased renal tubular flow without significant electrolyte excretion. Anti-inflammatory effects on urinary tract epithelium. Mild antibacterial activity against E. coli and Pseudomonas in vitro.

Expected onset · Diuretic effect within hours; symptom relief over days

How to take

Dosage

Dried leaf: 6–12 g/day as infusion. Standardised extract: 750–1,500 mg/day. Always with substantial additional water.

Timing

Throughout the day with 2+ litres total fluid intake

On the label

'Orthosiphon stamineus' or 'O. aristatus' leaf with stated sinensetin content. Tea form (cut and sifted leaf) or standardised extract.

Ideal for

Adults with mild urinary irritation or as adjunct in recurrent UTI prevention; people with calcium oxalate kidney-stone history seeking dietary-fluid optimisation.

Safety

Adequate fluid intake essential. Avoid in oedema due to cardiac or renal insufficiency. Generally well tolerated. Theoretical interaction with antihypertensives and diuretics, additive effect. Pregnancy and breastfeeding data limited.

Evidence

At a glance

EMA classifies Java tea leaf as Traditional Use for urinary-tract irrigation and minor urinary complaints. Adam 2009 review documents consistent aquaretic effect across clinical and preclinical work, with mechanism distinct from electrolyte-driven diuresis. Modern controlled-trial evidence is limited but the EMA traditional-use anchor provides regulatory grounding.
