Why

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) holds an EMA HMPC Traditional Use monograph for temporary loss of appetite and mild dyspeptic complaints (oral use), and for relief of minor skin inflammation and wounds (topical use). One of the most widely-used herbs in European folk medicine.

How it works

Bitter sesquiterpene lactones stimulate gastric secretion. Essential oil components (chamazulene, 1,8-cineole) provide mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects on skin. Tannins provide astringent effect.

How to take

Dosage

Internal: dried herb 4.5 g/day as infusion. Topical: 100 g herb per 20 L bath water; or compresses with infusion.

Timing

Internal: before meals. Topical: as needed.

Safety

Allergic reactions in Asteraceae-sensitive individuals (ragweed, daisies). Photosensitisation possible at high doses. Avoid in pregnancy (uterotonic at higher doses) and breastfeeding. Anticoagulant effect mild. Caution with warfarin and antiplatelets.
