Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
EMA-monograph topical astringent for skin inflammation, minor wounds, and haemorrhoidal symptoms.
Why
Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) bark and leaf preparations hold EMA HMPC monographs at Well-Established Use for symptomatic relief of skin inflammation, bruises and discomfort due to haemorrhoids. The aqueous distillate (hamamelis water) is the most-used topical form. Astringent and anti-inflammatory effects support use in eczema, contact dermatitis, anal pruritus, and minor abrasions.
How it works
Tannins (hamamelitannin) precipitate surface proteins, producing astringent (tightening) effect and reducing inflammatory exudation. Anti-inflammatory effects on cyclooxygenase and leukotriene pathways. Mild vasoconstrictor effect on superficial vessels, relevant for haemorrhoid symptoms.
Expected onset · Symptomatic relief within hours; full effect over days

Safety
Evidence
EMA classifies hamamelis preparations at Well-Established Use for skin inflammation and haemorrhoidal symptoms. Korting 1995 controlled trial confirmed anti-inflammatory effect of hamamelis distillate on UV-erythema and chemically-induced irritation. Modern dermatology evidence is small but the regulatory anchor is high-tier.
