Stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica folium)

Small RCT signal for allergic rhinitis, distinct from nettle root (which is for BPH).

Why

Stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica, folium) is distinct from the root preparation used for BPH. Two small RCTs report symptom reduction in seasonal allergic rhinitis (Mittman 1990, Roschek 2009). The EMA HMPC monograph for nettle leaf covers traditional use for joint pain (rheumatic complaints) rather than allergic rhinitis specifically.

How it works

Histamine and serotonin content (from the fresh plant) may produce paradoxical desensitisation. Carvacrol and tetrahydropalmatine have documented mast-cell-stabilising effects. Lectins modulate inflammatory cytokines.

Expected onset · Acute symptom relief within hours; sustained-use effects over 1–2 weeks

How to take

Dosage

Standardised freeze-dried extract: 300 mg two or three times daily during allergy season. Dried herb tea: 2–4 g as infusion three times daily.

Timing

Throughout the day during symptomatic phase

On the label

'Urtica dioica leaf' or 'nettle leaf', distinct from 'nettle root' for BPH. Freeze-dried preparation preserves the fresh-leaf bioactives better than air-dried.

Ideal for

Adults with seasonal allergic rhinitis exploring botanical adjuncts; people with rheumatic joint pain (the EMA-monograph indication).

Safety

Allergic reactions to the plant itself (rare given antihistamine use). May lower blood pressure. Caution with antihypertensives. Possible hypoglycaemic effect. Monitor in diabetes. Pregnancy: leaf is traditionally considered safe in moderate doses but data limited.

Evidence

At a glance

Mittman 1990 Planta Med RCT (n=98 allergic rhinitis): 57% of nettle-treated patients rated symptoms moderately or highly effective vs 37% on placebo at 1 week. Single trial; evidence base remains small. EMA monograph covers traditional use for rheumatic complaints rather than allergic rhinitis specifically.
