Soy protein (isolate)
FDA structure-function claim for cholesterol reduction and protein-substitute use, modest effect, smaller than later meta-analyses suggested originally.
Why
Soy protein isolate holds an FDA-authorised structure-function claim that 25 g/day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce risk of heart disease. The Anderson 1995 NEJM meta-analysis originally reported a 9% LDL reduction at the 25 g threshold; later FDA re-evaluation and subsequent meta-analyses found effects closer to 3–4% reduction. As a protein source for muscle synthesis it is comparable to whey at matched leucine content.
How it works
Combined effect of isoflavone phytoestrogens, soy peptides on cholesterol absorption, and substitution effect when replacing animal protein in the diet (reduced saturated fat). Muscle protein synthesis equivalent to whey at matched leucine intake.
Expected onset · Lipid effects over 8–12 weeks; muscle protein synthesis acute (post-workout)
How to take
Dosage
Cholesterol effect: 25 g/day soy protein. Protein supplementation: 20–40 g per serving as needed for protein-intake targets.
Timing
With or between meals; post-workout for muscle synthesis
On the label
'Soy protein isolate' (90%+ protein), distinct from soy concentrate or flour. Non-GMO certification if relevant. Stated grams protein per serving.
Ideal for
Adults with mild dyslipidaemia or seeking plant-protein options for muscle building; vegetarians/vegans needing concentrated protein.
Safety
Evidence
Anderson 1995 NEJM meta-analysis originally reported 9% LDL reduction at 25 g/day, later analyses found 3–4%. FDA maintains the 25 g/day soy protein cholesterol claim under structure-function regulation. Tang 2009 confirmed soy protein isolate produces meaningful muscle protein synthesis.
