Primrose root (Primula veris)
EMA-monograph expectorant, the key component of thyme-primrose fixed combinations for productive cough.
Why
Primrose root (Primula veris and P. elatior) holds an EMA HMPC monograph as a Traditional Herbal Medicinal Product for productive cough associated with cold. Most clinical evidence comes from fixed thyme-primrose combinations (Bronchipret), where it serves as the saponin-rich expectorant component. Rarely used alone; widely used as part of standardised European phytotherapy combinations for acute bronchitis.
How it works
Triterpene saponins (primulic acid) reduce surface tension in respiratory mucus, promoting secretolysis. Reflex stimulation of vagal afferents in gastric mucosa increases bronchial secretion, the classical 'reflex expectorant' mechanism.
Expected onset · Productive cough improvement over 4–7 days
How to take
Dosage
As part of a fixed thyme-primrose combination (Bronchipret) per product label. Monopreparation: 1.5–4 g dried root daily as infusion or equivalent fluid extract.
Timing
Three times daily during symptomatic phase
On the label
Bronchipret (fixed thyme-primrose) is the most-studied form. Monopreparation: standardised fluid extract.
Ideal for
Adults and children (typically 4+ years) with productive cough associated with acute bronchitis or upper respiratory infection.
Safety
Evidence
EMA classifies primrose root as Traditional Use for productive cough, based on over 30 years of documented use in European phytotherapy. Kemmerich 2007 RCT of the thyme-primrose fixed combination (n=361) reported significantly reduced cough fits and bronchitis symptom score vs placebo over 11 days. Effect is documented within fixed combinations, not as a monopreparation.
