EMA-monograph traditional European herb for cough and oral mucosa irritation, distinct from psyllium (which is Plantago seed).

Why

Ribwort plantain leaf (Plantago lanceolata) holds an EMA HMPC Traditional Use monograph for symptoms of cough associated with cold and temporary oral or pharyngeal mucosa irritation. Distinct from the psyllium / ispaghula husk seed of related Plantago species. Used widely in Central and Eastern European phytotherapy.

How it works

Mucilage demulcent effect on mucous membranes. Iridoid glycosides (aucubin, catalpol) with mild antibacterial activity. Mild astringent effect from tannins.
