Mullein (Verbascum)
EMA-monograph traditional European herb for productive cough, also used topically for ear discomfort.
Why
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus and related species) holds an EMA HMPC Traditional Use monograph for productive cough associated with cold. The mucilage content (similar to marshmallow) provides demulcent action; saponins contribute expectorant effect. Modern clinical evidence is limited; the regulatory anchor is the traditional-use registration. Mullein-infused oil is also used traditionally for ear discomfort.
How it works
Mucilage forms a demulcent coating on irritated respiratory mucosa. Iridoid glycosides (aucubin, catalpol) contribute mild anti-inflammatory effect. Saponins (verbascosaponin) thin mucus.
Expected onset · Symptomatic relief within hours; cough improvement over days
