Marshmallow leaf (Althaea officinalis folium)

EMA-monograph traditional European demulcent leaf. Separate monograph from marshmallow root (already in catalogue); for cough and mild oral mucosa irritation.

Why

Marshmallow leaf (Althaea officinalis folium) holds an EMA HMPC Traditional Use monograph distinct from the marshmallow root monograph (already in catalogue). Leaf preparations are used for symptomatic treatment of oral or pharyngeal irritation and associated dry cough. Both leaf and root contain mucilage, with similar demulcent action.

How it works

Mucilage polysaccharides form a protective film on oral, pharyngeal and oesophageal mucosa, physical demulcent effect distinct from antibacterial or expectorant mechanisms. Mild iridoid content contributes anti-inflammatory effect.

Expected onset · Soothing effect within hours

How to take

Dosage

Dried leaf: 1–4 g as cold-water macerate (soaked 30 min), up to 4 times daily.

Timing

3–4 times daily as needed

On the label

Althaea officinalis folium (leaf), distinct monograph from root (radix, already in catalogue).

Ideal for

Adults and children with dry irritated cough, sore throat, or mild oesophageal irritation. Useful complement to mucolytic and antimicrobial respiratory herbs.

Safety

Can slow absorption of co-administered medications. Separate by 1–2 hours. Cold-water macerate preserves mucilage (heat degrades it). Generally very well tolerated. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: traditional culinary preparation considered safe; medicinal-dose data limited.
