Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea)
EMA-monograph diuretic herb for urinary irrigation and adjunct in mild lower-UTI symptoms.
Why
European goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) flowering tops hold an EMA HMPC monograph at Traditional Use for increasing the amount of urine to achieve flushing of the urinary tract, as an adjuvant in minor urinary complaints. Used in European phytotherapy as an aquaretic, increasing urine volume without electrolyte loss. Often combined with uva ursi or bearberry in proprietary preparations.
How it works
Saponins, flavonoids and phenolic glycosides exert aquaretic effect via increased renal blood flow and tubular flow, distinct from loop-diuretic-style electrolyte-driven diuresis. Anti-inflammatory effect on urinary tract mucosa.
Expected onset · Diuretic effect within hours; symptom relief over days
How to take
Dosage
Dried herb: 6–12 g/day as infusion. Standardised fluid extract: per product label. Drink at least 2 litres of additional water daily.

Adults with mild lower-urinary irritation seeking irrigation therapy; adjunct alongside conventional UTI management.
Safety
Evidence
EMA classifies European goldenrod as Traditional Use for urinary-tract irrigation and adjunct in minor urinary complaints. Melzig 2004 review documents over 100 years of European phytotherapy use as an aquaretic, with mechanistic support from increased urine flow without altered electrolyte excretion. Modern RCT evidence is limited.
