Gentian root (Gentiana lutea)

EMA Well-Established Use bitter root, one of the most intensely bitter plants used, classical European pre-meal aperitif.

Why

Gentian root (Gentiana lutea) holds an EMA HMPC monograph at Well-Established Use for symptomatic treatment of mild digestive complaints (loss of appetite, feeling of fullness, slow digestion), the higher regulatory tier. Considered the classical European bitter, basis of many traditional aperitifs (Suze, Aperol's gentian component). Modern small RCTs and observational reports support mild appetite-stimulating effect.

How it works

Secoiridoid bitters (amarogentin, one of the most bitter substances known, gentiopicrin) stimulate the cephalic-phase gastric and salivary secretion via taste-receptor reflexes. Increased gastric acid and bile flow accelerates digestion of the subsequent meal.

Expected onset · Acute appetite-stimulating effect within minutes

How to take

Dosage

Dried root: 1–4 g as cold-macerated tea, 2–3 times daily before meals. Tincture: 1–4 ml three times daily.

Timing

10–30 minutes before main meals

On the label

Gentiana lutea root, with stated bitter value or amarogentin content. Liquid extracts and traditional aperitifs (low-alcohol, bitter) are most palatable.

Ideal for

Adults with mild appetite loss, postprandial fullness, slow digestion or convalescence seeking traditional European bitter preparations.

Safety

Avoid in active peptic ulcer disease (stimulates gastric acid secretion), hypotension (mild BP-lowering effect), and pregnancy. Mild nausea and headache possible at higher doses. Caution with antihypertensives.
