Couch grass (Elymus repens / Agropyron repens)
EMA-monograph European traditional aquaretic for urinary tract irrigation, among the gentler options in the urinary-herbal lineup.
Why
Couch grass rhizome (Elymus repens, also called Agropyron repens) holds an EMA HMPC Traditional Use monograph for the increased amount of urine to achieve flushing of the urinary tract, as adjuvant in minor urinary complaints. A common European garden 'weed' with longstanding traditional use as a gentle aquaretic. Often combined with stronger urinary herbs in proprietary preparations.
How it works
Polysaccharides (triticin), saponins and minor essential oil components produce mild aquaretic effect via increased renal tubular flow. Mucilage provides demulcent action on urinary mucosa.
