Chinese jujube / Red date (Ziziphus jujuba, Da Zao)
TCM Qi-tonifying fruit used in many decoctions and as a food, small RCT signal for subjective wellbeing.
Why
Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba, da zao, red date) is the dried fruit used in TCM as a Qi-tonifying ingredient, frequently added to decoctions to 'harmonise' formulas and as a daily food. Distinct from Suan Zao Ren (the seed of a related Ziziphus species used for sleep). Modern clinical evidence is small.
How it works
TCM framework: tonifies the Spleen and Stomach Qi, nourishes Blood, calms the Spirit. Polysaccharides and saponins have antioxidant and mild immunomodulatory effects. Cyclic AMP and saponins have weak central sedative effects.
