Caraway

EMA monograph for dyspepsia and bloating.

Why

EMA monograph for dyspepsia and bloating. Often combined with peppermint in clinical trials for functional dyspepsia.

How it works

Carvone and limonene reduce intestinal spasm and gas; commonly combined with peppermint oil in clinical trials for functional dyspepsia.

How to take

Dosage

Caraway fruit (whole or crushed): 1.5–6 g/day in divided doses. As essential oil: 3–6 drops daily, often combined with peppermint oil in fixed combination products.

Timing

Before or after meals

Safety

Avoid in hypersensitivity to Apiaceae family (fennel, anise, celery, coriander, dill), mugwort, or birch. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks.

Evidence

At a glance

EMA HMPC monograph registers Carum carvi fruit as a Traditional Herbal Medicinal Product for symptomatic relief of digestive disorders such as bloating and flatulence, traditional-use registration. The clearest modern RCT evidence is for fixed peppermint-oil/caraway-oil combinations in functional dyspepsia, not caraway alone.

Limitations

No chronic-onset timeline applies, caraway is an immediate-use carminative for digestive complaints rather than a chronic therapeutic. EMA registration is traditional-use only.
