Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi)
Ayurvedic nootropic with meta-analysis support for memory acquisition and recall over 12 weeks.
Why
Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) has been used in Ayurveda as a memory and cognitive tonic for over a millennium. A meta-analysis of 9 RCTs found significant improvement on tests of information processing and memory acquisition versus placebo, with effect emerging over 8–12 weeks of daily dosing. Effect on attention is smaller; effect on subjective wellbeing is mixed.
How it works
Bacosides A and B enhance cholinergic transmission, modulate dopamine and serotonin, and show antioxidant and BDNF-promoting activity in preclinical models. Effect requires steady-state dosing: acute single doses do not replicate the chronic-use effect.
Expected onset · Cognitive endpoints emerge over 8–12 weeks; not an acute nootropic
How to take
Dosage
300 mg/day of a standardised extract (50–55% bacosides), typically as a single dose with food. Some trials use 320–640 mg.
Timing
With breakfast or lunch; late doses can be activating
On the label
Look for a standardised extract (50% or 55% bacosides, e.g. BacoMind®, Bacognize®, CDRI-08). Raw powder is highly variable.
Ideal for
Adults with subjective memory or learning complaints; students or knowledge workers seeking a chronic-use cognitive aid.
Safety
